What exactly is this heavenly Christmas tree scent and where does it come from?

Maine is well known for its beautiful, lush green Balsam Fir trees, better known as the "traditional Christmas tree." Some Balsam Fir trees are grown locally on private Christmas tree farms and are shipped all over the country both as Christmas trees and wreaths. The trees are thinned and pruned throughout the year and are harvested and shipped beginning the first week of November. New trees are continuously planted and raised every year, so the farms are always being replenished with new trees. The Balsam Fir branches are pruned throughout the year to make the trees thick and healthy. We buy the pruned branches, which would ordinarily be discarded or burned, and grind up the fresh branches while the needles are still attached and use a special drying technique to lock in the pungent fragrance. We then fill all of our pillows by hand with the ground balsam fir. The final result produces an irresistible scent beyond compare!
